Module 9: Great white sharks

An organism that I have always been fascinated by is the great white shark. Don't get it twisted though, while I am fascinated I have always been scared of having an encounter when in the ocean. I have always been fascinated by these amazing creatures because of their size and power. Great white sharks usually grow to be an average of 15 feet long and 2.5 tons or greater. The really big great whites can even grow to be as long as 20 feet!! That's insane. Great white sharks mouths are lined with 300 serated, triangular teeth which are lined up in several rows. They even have organs that can detect electromagnetic fields generated by animals. Great white sharks have some amazing adaptations as well. Great whites boys have adapted into a torpedo shape in order to reduce the drag in the water. Great whites also have a fairly symmetrical body, and this is thought to allow them to move through what at a more efficient rate.

Hi Allison! I saw great white sharks and I clicked! haha. I had no idea that great white's had organs that can detect electromagnetic fields generated by other animals, that is pretty awesome. Thanks for the cool read!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that they are so fascinating but absolutely terrifying. The ocean is full of very strange creatures. The adaptions this organism has made is amazing, their size alone is outrageous but the teeth are crazy. The fact that organs can detect electromagnetic fields generated by animals is frightening, I had no idea that was possible. I wonder how scientists determined that. This species has adapted to be so strong and capable. I wonder what how else they will adapt in the future and if they can become even more efficient.
Allison,
ReplyDeleteI also find great white sharks amazing yet terrifying at the same time! The fact that they have 300 serrated teeth and will grow in another tooth if they fall out is really cool in my opinion. I love the ocean but the fact that we haven't even begun to uncover most of what's out there is a little creepy. Perhaps some of the species we thought we long gone are actually still around and we just haven't seen them yet.
